Rinnai Tankless Water Heater Sizing Options

When it comes to choosing a water heater, tankless options are ideal for many due to their on-demand or continuous flow way of heating water. This means that the water is heated when it is needed, which makes it a more energy efficient choice for your home. We love Rinnai as a brand, but when choosing a Rinnai Tankless Water, there are a few sizing options to learn about.  Learn about finding the perfect Rinnai Tankless Water Heater size for your home and why you should choose a tankless water heater in the first place.

Why Choose a Rinnai Tankless Water Heater?

First of all, if you are looking for a dependable water heater that has a brand name that is rich in history and reliability, Rinnai is the one to choose. Not only has the company been around for almost 100 years but Rinnai Tankless Water Heaters save up to 40% less energy, making your home greener and more energy efficient. Also, if a part on the Rinnai Tankless Water Heater, it can be replaced. You no longer have to buy a whole new water heater but can instead fix individual areas.

What is a Tankless Water Heater?

A tankless water heater is quite different from what you may be familiar with in a regular water heater. You get plenty of hot water when you need it which makes it more earth friendly, it produces less waste due to its extended lifespan, and it has lower CO2 emissions.

It works by cold water entering inlet pipe at the bottom the flame ignition or igniter is activated. Oxygen enters the burner by a combustion fan being turned on. When there is enough flame, the next thing happens which is making the water heat when passed through the heat exchanger, then through the hot water exit pipes. This is what travels to your areas that need hot water such as the shower or kitchen sink.

To meet demands, the blower and gas valve adjust the water automatically. There is even a digital controller which is used to adjust the temperature to your comfort level. Once the hot water is no longer needed, the cold water no longer enters the water heater, and the flame decreases.

Average Flow Rates

To find the ideal tankless water heater size for your home, you will need an idea of how many gallons per minute (GPM) you will need. Here are some examples of items used in the home and how many GPMs are used.

  • Bathtub. 2.0 – 4.0 gpm
  • Shower. 1.5 – 3.0 gpm
  • Dishwasher. 1.0 – 3.0 gpm
  • Laundry Sink. 2.5 – 3.0 gpm
  • Kitchen Sink. 1.0 – 1.5 gpm
  • Hot Tub. 4.0 – 8.0 gpm

To find the right water heater for your needs, you will need to add up things you may use at the same time such as the dishwasher and laundry sink. In that example, you would need from 3.5 – 6 GPMs.
